Why Should You Choose A Fiberglass Swimming Pool

When summer is in its fullest glory and the mercury starts to rise to reach uncomfortable levels, we all start dreaming of going for a swim. Swimming pools have caught the fancy of a great majority of the population due to summers becoming more and more unbearable with every passing year coupled with the affordable prices of residential pools. If you plan to use your own in-ground swimming pool, a fiberglass swimming pool is one of the options that you should explore as they are definitely better value for money than the poured concrete swimming pools.

Although a prefabricated fiberglass swimming pool is more expensive upfront than concrete or vinyl liners, in the long run they can mean a substantial saving. Fiberglass pools require minimal maintenance, a smaller quantity of chemicals for purifying water, and miniscule expense on repairs and cleaning.

Unlike traditional poured concrete pools, fiberglass swimming pool is a prefabricated shell that is set in an excavated site. It is some what similar to a backyard pool but the similarity ends only at the appearance. The inside of the fiberglass is sealed to produce a non porous, smooth surface that is very unlike concrete. The best part is that the surface does not affect the chemistry of the water as it does not interact with it.

Cleaning a fiberglass swimming pool does not require any scrubbing and uses less harsh chemicals for cleaning. It is a boon for people who are allergic to chlorine and hate scrubbing. Concrete develops cracks and need re-plastering on a regular basis. Painting a concrete pool too is a cumbersome job. Even vinyl liners that do not crack do eventually develop faults and require replacement. Fiberglass swimming pools are devoid of any such maintenance. The material does not develop cracks easily and is also earthquake proof. The material bends with the ground and does not split under pressure. They are also not affected by ground frost.

However, fiberglass swimming pools do not match some requirements that some pool owners may want. They come in pre-designed shapes and although they come in a variety of depths, they cannot be customized to individual needs like concrete or vinyl. Moreover, fiberglass pools are designed in a way that they need to be filled up to a certain level at all times to maintain an even pressure from outside and inside the walls. As such, in extremely cold climates you may not be able to "weather" your pool by emptying it for some months.

All said and done, if you choose your pool after considering all the options, concrete, vinyl, or fiberglass, you can come to a sound decision. Concrete and vinyl pools have their own advantages. So does the fiberglass material. It is a matter of weighing one against the other. The major deciding factors can be cost and climate. Whereas the extra upfront cost of fiberglass is offset by its cheaper running costs, you have no control over the climate factor. If the climate factor is favorable to you and the shapes and depths available in the stores meet your fancy, the right choice would be a fiberglass swimming pool.
